Tooth Socket Graft for Delayed Implants PlacementTooth extraction is a necessary dental procedure that is performed to remove damaged teeth, especially when dental implants are being considered. However, if you are not planning to get implants immediately following the extraction, the missing teeth can lead to bone loss – thus making it harder to get implants at a later time. Fortunately, it is possible to prevent the bone loss by preserving the tooth socket left behind after extraction. At Gwinnett Dental Implant & Periodontal Center, we offer tooth socket grafting, a bone-grafting procedure that regenerates new bone tissue in the tooth socket, thus preventing jawbone deterioration. Benefits of a Tooth Socket Graft?A tooth socket graft can offer you the following benefits:
What to Expect During Tooth Socket Grafting Procedure?Tooth socket grafting is a simple procedure performed on the same day as the tooth extraction procedure. Immediately after the removal of a damaged tooth, the tooth socket is cleaned (and treated in case of an infection). A bone graft material is then placed inside the socket, and the gum tissue sutured. The graft material used can be harvested from your own body or a cadaver or animal source. A synthetic bone graft can also be used in place of the natural bone. After the Tooth Socket Graft – Aftercare, Recovery and Implant PlacementFollowing the tooth socket graft procedure, you might experience a few side effects. These include bleeding, swelling, pain. The bleeding can be controlled by using a gauze pad, and it usually subsides after a few hours. The pain is managed through prescribed pain medication, and it can last for a day or two. The swelling also starts to subside after a few days, but it can be managed, in the meantime, by placing a cold compress on the cheeks near the surgery site. Immediately following the surgery, you will be given aftercare instructions that will help to ensure proper and fast healing. These instructions include:
After the surgery site completely heals, you can resume normal routines – brushing, flossing, and eating without diet limitation. However, the tissue regeneration process takes longer, which can be a few or several months, depending on the amount of bone needed. Once the bone tissue has fully regenerated, you can then proceed to get your dental implants – or wait until you are ready for the treatment. We also offer a variety of dental solutions for the treatment of jaw and gum deterioration. For more information about jaw & gum resorption, give us a call. Tooth extraction can help to get rid of problematic teeth, but it can also result in bone loss that would disqualify you from a future dental implant procedure. At Gwinnett Dental Implant & Periodontal Center, we can help you to prevent this using a tooth socket graft procedure. Call us today at (470) 222-8983 to schedule an appointment. |
