Periodontitis – Types of Surgical Treatments

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Gwinnett Dental Implant & Periodontal Center
Periodontitis – Types of Surgical TreatmentsPeriodontitis is also commonly known as gum disease. It is a common oral infection that is responsible for damaging the soft tissue in the gums around with the supporting bone around the tooth. Without out timely treatment, the condition could also result in you losing your teeth, as well as other medical complications.

While there are several non-invasive treatment options available for the treatment of periodontitis, in severe cases, surgical treatment may be required. The following are some of the options for periodontal disease surgical treatment.

Surgical Treatment Option 1 – Flap Surgery

Flap surgery is also known as pocket reduction surgery. During this procedure, tiny incisions are made in the gums to lift the gum tissue of that area back. This exposes the roots for better root planing or scaling. Once healed, it is easier to clean this area of plaque or tartar for maintaining good oral hygiene.

Surgical Treatment Option 2 – Soft Tissue Grafting

Once the gum line recedes, the damaged tissue will need to be reinforced. This process is carried out by removing a bit of tissue from the palate or using tissue from donors and attaching it to the affected area. This surgical procedure is carried out in severe cases of periodontitis.

Surgical Treatment Option 3 – Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is another surgical treatment option that is performed mainly when the bone that's surrounding the root of the teeth has been destroyed because of periodontal disease. The graft is composed of small fragments of bone or bone from a donor. This bone graft helps keep the tooth in place and prevents any further damage to the bone and your teeth.
