You May Need a Soft Tissue Graft After Gum Disease Treatment

You May Need a Soft Tissue Graft After Gum Disease TreatmentGum disease treatment is used to treat periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease. If a patient is suffering from this complication, they may need several forms of treatment in order to bring their oral cavity back to a healthy state. Gum recession is experienced by patients with periodontitis, meaning a soft tissue graft may be necessary to replace the gum that has been lost. A soft tissue graft can help give strength back to your teeth and reduce the symptoms of periodontitis.

Why is a Soft Tissue Graft Necessary?

Periodontitis is a disease of the gums, which means the soft tissue surrounding the teeth is impacted. The disease causes the gum to recede, which impacts the rest of the oral cavity, primarily, the structural integrity of the teeth. Without gum holding them in place, teeth can become loose and you may even notice exposed tooth root due to gum recession. If this recession is allowed to continue, you will experience more loose teeth and even tooth loss. We can help prevent this through gum disease treatment and soft tissue grafts.

The gum disease treatment is there to reduce the symptoms of periodontitis and try and remove it from the mouth. Periodontitis is often irreversible, which means we must stay on top of your oral health to prevent it from escalating. Once symptoms have been reduced, a soft tissue graft can be used to repair some of the damage the disease has caused. This can help bring your oral cavity back to its initial strength and prevent its condition from worsening. Soft tissue grafts are not necessary for all patients suffering from periodontitis, but our dentist may recommend them if they notice gum recession.
