a close up of healthy gums and pearly teethHave you ever been told you have receding gums? Do you feel hesitant about smiling because your teeth appear longer than usual? If so, you might be a candidate for a soft tissue graft.

Soft tissue grafts are a type of restorative dentistry procedure that can help restore your receding gums. This procedure involves taking healthy gum tissue from one area of your mouth and grafting it to the area where your gums have receded.

There are three main types of soft tissue grafts:

•  Free Gingival Graft: This is the most common type of soft tissue graft. It involves taking a small piece of gum tissue from the roof of your mouth and grafting it to the area where your gums have receded. This helps to increase the amount of gum tissue around your teeth and provides better coverage for the roots.
•  Connective Tissue Graft: This type of graft is used to increase the thickness of your gums. It involves taking a small piece of connective tissue from the roof of your mouth and placing it under the existing gum tissue. This helps to create a stronger and healthier gum foundation.
•  Pedicle Graft: This type of graft uses gum tissue that is already attached to the area where the gums have receded. The dentist will simply rotate the tissue to cover the exposed root. This is a less invasive option than the other two types of grafts.

Why Get a Soft Tissue Graft?

There are several reasons why you might need a soft tissue graft. These include:

•  Gum recession: This is the most common reason for getting a soft tissue graft. Gum recession can be caused by aggressive brushing, gum disease, or other factors.
•  Exposed tooth roots: When your gums recede, the roots of your teeth can become exposed. This can lead to sensitivity, pain, and cavities.
•  Improve the appearance of your smile: Soft tissue grafts can help to improve the appearance of your smile by making your teeth look longer and more even.

Benefits of a Soft Tissue Graft

There are many benefits to getting a soft tissue graft, including:

•  Improved oral health: Soft tissue grafts can help to improve your oral health by reducing the risk of gum disease, cavities, and tooth loss.
•  Reduced sensitivity: Soft tissue grafts can help to reduce sensitivity by covering the exposed roots of your teeth.
•  Improved appearance: Soft tissue grafts can improve the appearance of your smile by making your teeth look longer and more even.
•  Increased confidence: Soft tissue grafts can help to increase your confidence by giving you a healthier and more attractive smile.

What to Expect During and After the Procedure

The soft tissue graft procedure is typically performed in the dentist's office under local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes about an hour.

After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. You will need to follow your dentist's instructions carefully during the healing process. This may include eating soft foods, avoiding strenuous activity, and taking pain medication.

Soft tissue grafts are a safe and effective way to treat gum recession and improve your oral health. If you are considering a soft tissue graft, be sure to talk to your dentist to see if it is the right option for you.
