Are Gum Grafts Painful?

Are Gum Grafts Painful?Has your periodontal disease caused receding gums? You may feel embarrassment and pain if your teeth appear longer than usual and are more sensitive because of exposed tooth structures. A gum graft can minimize your symptoms and provide you with an improved smile. Will this procedure cause any discomfort? Is there a timeframe for recovery?

What Does a Gum Graft Do?

It is an oral procedure designed to repair receding gums in patients who are suffering from periodontal disease or bruxism (teeth grinding). To minimize the symptoms of receding gums, a periodontist can perform a gum graft as part of a patient's gum disease treatment. Small pieces of tissue are removed from another part of the mouth and surgically placed over the exposed or receded areas, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Your mouth will be numbed with local anesthesia prior to receiving a gum graft. The procedure can also be sedated if necessary to help you remain calm. Your periodontist will carefully attach the tissue to the appropriate location after removing a small portion of the tissue. After your procedure, you will be instructed to wear gauze over the surgical site to prevent infection.

Is It Painful?

The anesthesia will ensure that you are completely numb throughout your surgery. It is common to experience soreness and discomfort once the effects have worn off. Several methods exist to manage pain and prevent complications. To ensure an easy and successful recovery, avoid brushing or rinsing your mouth on the day of your surgery, avoid strenuous activity for a week, take your medication as prescribed, and avoid warm foods and beverages.

You must follow the appropriate steps to ensure you heal properly after a gum graft. You'll enjoy a healthier, more beautiful smile in no time. Get in touch with our periodontist today for more information about gum grafts.
